Thaen mittai / தேன் மிட்டாய்

Thaen mittai is a classic sweet-treat reminiscent of one's childhood. Stored in tall glass jars, Thaen Mittai or sugar balls are popularly sold across villages in Tamil Nadu and Kerala making them a  truly local and native delicacy. These humble sweets are made from a mixture of ground rice, dhal, baking powder and a hint of food colouring (to give it the unique orange colour). This mixture is made into a batter and fried into balls. These balls are then soaked in a sugar syrup. Take a bite and the syrup just oozes into your mouth and the sweet melts away.
